Gardens are a subject I return to again and again. The life cycle of a flower bed its birth to bloom to decay, mirrors the different seasons of life, and feels like a way into something universal about emotion and time passing. What draws me in is the liveness and stillness held together: abundant colour and wildness alongside a quietness, and the space between abstraction and figuration. Painting them is a way of staying with that feeling a little longer.
